Title: Another Project
Post by: kizer on August 26, 2008, 08:01:55 PM
I don't have time for this one either, but I decided to take on another project. It will probably rot in my garage if it ever makes it because of all the junk in it. ;)

Heres the Craigslist Ad.

65 chevy 1/2 ton, 250 6 -cyl 3 on the tree. pretty straight, good tires, collecter plates. drive it to hell and back...15-18 mpg. trade for motorbike.

I traded it for $400 because I don't own a motorbike.

Welp its not pretty, but its mine. ;) A buddy came with me and gave me the thumbs up. He actually drove it home since the front brakes are shot and I've never driven a 3 on the tree before. He took off on one side street up a hill and well I couldn't catch him if I tried in his Jeep.

Looking around there is some work ahead of me. I think looking it over in the drive way after we brought it home I don't think there is one piece of sheet metal that doesn't have a dent or a hole in it. Looks like I'm going to learn how to weld if I like it or not. ;) If Rust is a Cancer this thing is for sure on the Terminally Ill list.

Here are some shots. It was with my camera phone so yes they suck, but its what I have for now. Hopefully I can make some room in the garage and I'll start tearing it apart as time allows.

What I do know:
Looks like a straight 6
3speed on the column and shifts well
Smokes at start up, but doesn't seem to when you get on it.
Windows rollup and down pretty easily
Lights work, however some of the running lights and blinkers seem to have a mind of their own
Horn works
Wood bed
Doors don't squeak or crack when you open and close them
Engine has a leak on top
Windshield wipers work
Starts right up after a few cranks
Clutch appears to engage high up near the top - Adjustable? We will see
Brakes are shot up front. Grind, Grind when you use them.
Blinkers don't appear to work
Frame appears to be straight because it doesn't looks sideways going down the road from behind.

All in all its going to be a project truck. I'm going to learn how to weld, paint and I'm sure I'm going to learn the proper way to fill in holes using the proper amount of bondo. ;) I know most will not use it, but I don't have an endless supply of liquid Metal laying around.

I still have access to another truck so there will be some part stealing. Like the hood and a few other parts. Its going to be a who has the better of the two for starters.

Welp brought it in the garage recently and pulled a 1970 Beetle out that I kept saying some day I would work on. It went to a good home where the guy wanted to tear it apart and rebuild it for his 10year old Daughter.

Did a photo shoot around looking for damage and just a general reminder for later how far its come. Or a reminder of how long it sat looking like that before I get anything done. hahahaha

I was super happy to get the front and rear lights working. Its amazing what poking around with the wiring can fix. I've always loved the lights on the hood and I was happier than heck to see them come on and work like they are supposed to.

Got start somewhere so I did. The wife kicked my outside and said we where leaving in 15minutes. So I took a little dead blow hammer and beat up some rotten wood. Sure I'm sure I have tons more I could be working on, but hey I want to take the bed off and start working in the rear down to the frame and then I'll start working forward.

(http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp64/links4jeeps_chevy/07_bed/th_IMG00196.jpg) (http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp64/links4jeeps_chevy/07_bed/IMG00196.jpg) (http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp64/links4jeeps_chevy/10_bed/th_IMG00210.jpg) (http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp64/links4jeeps_chevy/10_bed/IMG00210.jpg)
(http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp64/links4jeeps_chevy/10_bed/th_IMG00211.jpg) (http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp64/links4jeeps_chevy/10_bed/IMG00211.jpg) (http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp64/links4jeeps_chevy/10_bed/th_IMG00216.jpg) (http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp64/links4jeeps_chevy/10_bed/IMG00216.jpg)

Needless to say I have a lot of little metal strips that need to be pulled out because they are rusted beyond repair, but the bed supports are fine along with the main bed sections.

Now I just have to break out the PB blaster and start working on all the fittings so I can get things apart. Man its going to be a pain in the ass, but I think it will be fun at the same time

No big updates, but started pulling more of the bed out. Man I had no idea the bed was a giant erector set. 8 bazillion bolts, but hey I'm having fun so far. Used my new Saw Zaw in the middle just because I could ;) Just pulled out the bed strips and hit the bed with some Rustoleum spray paint just to hold it over until I can start stripping, which hopefully will be in the new few months. But I'm going to try and tackle the frame and suspension components some before playing with body panels.

Just layed out some money to buy some Por15 and that doesn't arrive until next week, but my plans are to strip off all the paint under the bed and including the frame and the lower bed supports and Por15 and coat with Chasis black.

As for the over all look yeah its going to get a static drop meaning drop spindles in the front and some type of drop in the rear along with bags so I can adjust as I see fit. I'm not thinking its going to sit on frame, but its going to be lower than stock.

As for Vintage yeah I've always liked the 55-57 era, but I've also liked the 63-66. I just knew that when I found this for $400 it was a steal and I had to give it some effort. ;)

This is more or less my offical thread/blog for the truck. I just figured why not stir up some yacking here too. ;)

Welp yesterday was my Birthday so my present to myself and well work was to take it off. They just happen to believe in paid Birthday leave so I took it.

I decided to take the bed off and do some cleaning on the frame since I need to because hopefully I'll be able to paint the frame under the bed next week before I man up and tackle real work. You know looking for rust and taking big body parts off.

Anyways I got creative and used my engine hoist and some motor cycle straps to lift the bed off after using a cutting wheel on my 4-inch grinder to cut off the bolts holding the bed to the frame. Oh yeah the wife wasn't to impressed coming home finding me using the lawn furniture to support the bed, but hey it was my Birthday so she forgave me some. ;)

(http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp64/links4jeeps_chevy/13_bed/th_DSCN6869.jpg) (http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp64/links4jeeps_chevy/13_bed/DSCN6869.jpg) (http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp64/links4jeeps_chevy/13_bed/th_DSCN6872.jpg) (http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp64/links4jeeps_chevy/13_bed/DSCN6872.jpg) (http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp64/links4jeeps_chevy/13_bed/th_DSCN6876.jpg) (http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp64/links4jeeps_chevy/13_bed/DSCN6876.jpg) (http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp64/links4jeeps_chevy/13_bed/th_DSCN6877.jpg) (http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp64/links4jeeps_chevy/13_bed/DSCN6877.jpg) (http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp64/links4jeeps_chevy/13_bed/th_DSCN6879.jpg) (http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp64/links4jeeps_chevy/13_bed/DSCN6879.jpg)

Wife says it looks retarded because of the big ass front end and the tiny looking rear end. I of course reassured here that its supposed to look that way because if didn't look retarded everybody would be doing it. hahahaha

I took the power washer to it and hit every possible nook and cranny on the frame behind the cab. I wanted every loose piece to be removed so when I hit it will a stripping wheel next weekend there isn't HUGE chunks of crap everywhere. Its going to be bad enough with the flying surface rust. After power washing it I let the truck sit outside all after noon so any water would evaporate and or just drip off.

After its little visit outside I backed the truck in to the garage and used the same motor cycle straps suspended the bed from the ceiling and lowered it back on to the frame. For now its just going to sit there until I get the frame stripped and painted. As well I made sure I had a support beam running across several trusses so my roof wouldn't buckle and well hurt things. I used two straps on each connection so they would be longer. I could literally raise it up to the ceiling or lay it on the ground. I just wanted a little flexibility. Of course its just a temp hoist not intended to hold up the bed for any lengthy period. Just so I can back in or out and then use the lovely lawn furniture.

I took a ton of photos of the frame just looking for problems. I know I have to replace my bushings on my trailing arms aka control arms as well as the pan hard bar aka track bar. Also I have to look at the shocks, springs and the U-joints. This truck has a long drive shaft that is split in two so I have to service 3 sets of U-joints and a central support that holds up the 3rd U-joint.

Well my POR15 arrived and between dodging the wifes Honey Do lists and my 3year old I was able to spend some time in the garage.

As we can tell here the surface was well nasty and needed some cleaning. I took a flapper wheel and more or less pulled off all the grime and loose stuff. It it wasn't loose or flakey I just scuffed it up some to give POR15 something to stick to. I was truely surprised to see actual paint under all that crap.

Following the instructions from POR15 they recommend using a cleaning solution which to me sorta smelt like Simple Green and floor wax stripper mixed together. After a rise and then followed by an etching solution followed by another rinse this is what the results where. I of course dried it and let it sit for a few more minutes not indicated in this photo of course. ;)

Grabbed a paint brush and gave it a few strokes. This stuff really lays on pretty easily and they say its self leveling and they are not kidding.

Little side shot of the surface. For some reason my flash turned the surface grey and really exagerated the roughness inside the frame on the drivers side.

Another coat is needed of the base paint then I'm going to hit the frame with Chasis black, pull the coils, shocks and track bar and hit under them. Replace bushings on the control arms, trackbar and relace.

I've thought about hitting the control arms front and rear along with the rear axle with a metal color that they have, but haven't decided as of yet. Either way its all getting hit with the base coat just to keep it painted and well less prone to rust.

I also started locating all of the fastners to reattach the bed. I'm going to replace evertying with with Stainless Steel to make it easier to put things back together and in the future to take things apart. Also I've decided to pickup one of those Factory Assembly Manuals so I can see how things are "supposed" to go back together. ;)

Thanks guys. I just started this thread to give the guys that well have other intrests than their Jukes something to look at. Well I also figured that others might do their own little side project shows too.

Yeah I'm just taking it slow and working on it when I can. Money/Time allowing. I figure Ill protect the frame and then goto town on the rest of the body when I can or when I have the money. I figure if the frame doesn't rust away then I'm one step closer to keeping it alive. ;)

I haven't really decided on colors yet, but this one really has me excited.

However I don't plan on having the center cap so I can show off my 6-lugs and chome grease cap, but I do like the red wheels. ;)

Don't know as of yet what the paint is going to be. Its going to be old school thats for sure. I'm trying to avoid the bright and shinny finishes. The only thing that this thing will have shinning is the lights and the chrome front bumper and grill.

Well OK, maybe the mirrors and the door handles as well as the filler neck for the gas tank located in the cab unless I shave them off and/or relocate the gas tank to the rear.

Welp did some more playing since the wife decided to put up Halloween stuff everywhere. My boy was taking an afternoon nap so I just said time to paint and grind some more. ;)

Dumped the gear old and yes its brown. Not the goldish brown that I'm used to seeing with gear oil, but like a dirty brown and didn't stink like gear oil normally does. It was really weird. I opened up a can of brake cleaner and just went a little overboard with it because I wanted to make sure whatever was in the diff came out.

I also noticed there was no RTV, but found what looks like a gasket of some sort. It had the same indention on the backside like it was meant for the cover. Man it was really nice not having to scrape any RTV off. I just took a wire brush to the surface of the cover and the housing and made sure the gasket was clean of any debris.

Did they come with rubber gaskets from the factory? My Jeep didn't so I use RTV, but I know they make rubber gaskets. I'm just trying to guage the last time the rear was serviced.

Made a little painting station since it was all paint brush on I just used some wire to hang from a piece of PVC piping and went to town.

I think the first coat turned out pretty good. It could of been a little better, but I started to loose my patience using the steel brush.

Hit the axle with some degreaser, rinsed it off and used the etching solution that POR15 recommends. I plan on painting it this evening so I don't have to hit it again with the wire wheel. Man there are way to many little hiding spots for grease and 40year old clumps of debris to live in.

I pulled the fill plug and the rear cover so I can make sure I don't POR15 them on since it would be a little bit of a pain in the butt to get them off once they are painted on. ;)

Control arms are painted as well as the rear track bar with new bushings. I just have to hit the diff and the suspension parts one more time with a second coat and then hit everything with the top coat of chasis black because the bottom coat doesn't like the UV rays.

Old school gear oil was made of whale blubber, it's likely that's original oil and original gasket.  I don't see signs of water/metal in it so I think you'll be ok.

Does the oil have a really bad smell to it? ;)
Title: Re: Another Project
Post by: kizer on October 14, 2008, 03:51:59 PM
Actually it had no real smell to it all. Gear oil normally stinks really bad when its burnt. As well 80/90 that I normally use is kinda thick like snot and this was almost watery, almost like choclate milk thickness. I looked at all the surfaces and even rotated the spider gears around and didn't see any chipped teeth or odd colors to indicate any heating or damaging. I was told that 12bolts are pretty strong rear ends and for my intended purposes I shouldn't have any issues.

Yeah I thought I got it for a pretty good deal. It needs some work, but hey its a project truck and not my daily driver so I'm learning things and well cutting fingers and getting dirt everywhere. ;)

Did do a little more last night. Got the majority of the axle painted up. I haven't done the ends as of yet. I wasn't in the mood to pull the tires off and pull the axles or brake cylinders. As well I didn't want to paint them on so I could never remove them either. ;) I do plan on addressing the rear brakes soon so I'll tackle that when I get close.

Man those brake lines look really nasty. I guess I should address those as well when I address the rear brakes.

As for the drive shaft I haven't decided if I should remove all the surface rust and give it a coat of silver or something of the like or ignore it for a while. Either way its going to stand out like a sore thumb and drive me a little batty.
Title: Re: Another Project
Post by: Barcrest on October 14, 2008, 04:00:41 PM
You need to clean up the drive shaft. At least get the surface rust off and see what it looks like then. Of course easy for me to say i'm not doing it.

Hahaha, no kidding man. Maybe I'll put the truck on jack stands, start the engine and let the axle slowly rotate and hit it with a wire brush. I guess if the truck fell off the jack stands I'd never do that again. ;) I'd probably never walk again either.

Get yourself a "Gimp"

It's a 3" heavy wire brush that mounts in an angle grinder.  It'll take the rust of that in no time.  WEAR A MASK the gimp is quite good at its job.

Get yourself a "Gimp"

It's a 3" heavy wire brush that mounts in an angle grinder.  It'll take the rust of that in no time.  WEAR A MASK the gimp is quite good at its job.

So he also needs to buy a gimp mask...  :D

I was trying to do a search for "gimp" and holly crap it comes up with more things than I should post here in an open forum. hahaha

I call it the gimp because it shakes the crap out of you when you use it.

Oh yeah I have one of those. It makes nice swirly marks in the metal. ;)

Well you said you were going to paint it right?

Yeah. I was just talking smack. ;)

I'm not sure if I want to POR15 it or just hit it with some spray paint. POR15 would last well longer, but I don't want to glue the weights on if it ever needs rebalanced.

Welp I decided to say screw it and hit the shaft with a wide piece of what appears to be thin sand paper rolled around the shaft. The surface rust was well very easy to remove and it came off pretty clean. I hit it a few times and used some degreaser in between each scrub just to make sure it was coming out clean. Then I used some acid etch and painted it. As well I top coated the entire frame with the UV protectant for POR15. Let it sit for a few days and started putting things together.

I got wild and painted the coils and shocks with some silver Hammerite paint. They are to be replaced with Bags and new shocks anyways, but thought it would be fun to see some color back there. ;)

There are some shinny spots that I need to touch up which is the base coat of the POR15 showing through. The top coat is a real flat looking paint that I really like. It almost reminds me of flat black Rustoleum which I've always liked. Of course I have to pick up some Ubolts to mount the lower shock mounts.

Im going to write off the rear for now and address the following when I can because the garage is getting cold and I don't have heat to paint:
Rear brake lines and hoses
Fill the rear end
Rear brakes
Axle ends which unless Im wrong is also the backing plate for the brakes
Repair/replace the bed wiring
Replace Ujoints and paint touch up shaft and rear end

I call this the off the boards back on all 4's post. ;)

UPS last told me that my U-bolts would be here tomorrow, but since they arrived I just had to install them so I could push the truck back since its hogging part of my wife's parking spot in the garage.

Is it just me or do they appear to be freaking HUGE? I couldn't believe how big they where when I took them out of the box. I thought damn where they really this big when I cut the last ones off? Yep it appears so.

As well I figured I might as well get the rear cover back on since I need to fill it up full of lube soon and my excuse earlier was that the pinion angle is way off since there is nothing to set the pinion. ;) I went a little clean happy and well hit all of the cover bolts with a wire wheel mounted on my grinder.

Before

After

I did notice something that I thought was a bit odd. When you use the U-bolts they run over the axle, through the control arm and connect to the lower shock mount like shown in the below picture.

However the U-bolts came with some rather thick fender type washers that are used on the bottom of the lower shock mount. They simply do not fit so I had to clearance them a little bit with the grinder. I just took off some of the material on one side so it would fit inside the lower shock mount.

While I was at it I installed a new vent for the axle. The old one was covered with a lot of dried up grease or at least I think it was.

The pictures/flash really point out things I seem to need to address in the future. You know the red/rust color things that aren't black. Some day I sware. hahahaha

Next I just need to tighten everything down and fill up the rear with some gear lube. What happens after that I'm not really sure. I know I need to push the frame back under the bed so the wife can have back some of her parking area since she nearly hits the truck every time she pulls in. I guess I'll throw on some more bolts on the bed while I look for more things to replace. The budget is getting really slim and I might have to just do little things that do not require funds for a while.

Now that I look at the photos I should pull off the other bolts and give them the wire brush treatment. Just have to see what I can steel brush and what I can't so they don't rust.

Haha, yeah your telling me. ;) Problem is I can't really devote hours at a time its been an hour here and and hour there. I'd really love to just have a day or two to just tear into things and see what damage I can do. Lately its been well after work and school and when my boy goes to bed. So that means from 8pm - 10pm because I normally like to hit the sack around 10pm if I don't my wife gets cranky. Of course 8pm - 10pm means no TV or playing on the computer. So its basically somethings gotta give, but hey thats life I suppose. ;)

I began by starting to remove the cross supports so I can get the 40years of grit and flaky paint off of it. I figure I'll tear up the rear and then when I can put the front clip in the bed and then pull the cab so I can attack the front 2/3 of the frame. After that its head scratching trying to figure out where to get funds to patch and replace sheet metal.

Oh yeah its not really anything, but I started a comment free blog type of thing by doing a lot of cut and pasting. Thats if anybody ever wants to read any of my ramblings. Hit the Archives tons of stuff. http://www.links4jeesps.com/chevytruck/

Not a lot to report today. However I was standing in the garage looking at my truck because I'm getting a little jealous seeing all the other guys working on theirs and weather has been really cold and wet up here. Heck it snowed earlier today of all things. My wife pulls in and says what are you doing? I told her I wanted to do something with the truck today, but I wasn't sure what.

Wife: Does it have Gas in the tank?
Me: Yeah, it should start since I've been starting it once a month since I've had it and let it run for about 10-15minutes at a time.

Wife: Do the brakes work?
Me: Yeah, but I wouldn't trust them very much since I haven't done a really good bleed since I just replaced the grinding metal ones.

Wife: Lets take it for a spin up and down the drive way. Check the mail and see dad.
Me: Sure enough I had the thing started faster than she could get her rig out of the way. ;)

Her dad came out and said. I thought you where going to grind down the frame and paint it. Looks factory to me. I was in hog heaven since he couldn't even tell the difference. Other than the fact its black as black opposed to rust orange.  Maybe he needs glasses, but I took the complement just the same.

Since I got the desire to drive it one more time before I pull the front clip and cab off I guess there is nothing standing in my way other than excuses now.

Man the 3speed tried its hardest to get stuck in gear. There was a rattling somewhere in the cab, the muffler fell down and was dragging on the drive shaft, but the 250 pulling like a mule and listening to the Transmission whine was music to my ears. We hit a chuck hole or 3 and it bounced and rode smooth. I was super impressed for 40+ year old components. The turning of the steering wheel 50times in one direction to turn and the brakes bearing working was a dream. Man I'm starting tomorrow on pulling the front clip off. Wooooohoooo parts are going to be everywhere. ;)

Threw the bed back on and turned it around in the garage. I had to take a photo or two before the dismantling began. Since I'm not Alan and this is going to take a lot longer than his Orange rig. ;)

Throwing the bed on and removing hood and spring and started on top took a while so not a whole lot removed so far.

Yesterday

I'm BLIND, I'm BLIND. Just pulled out the head light chrome trim rings, head lights and head light buckets.

On top of that right after I took out my Drivers side headlight I dropped it and it exploded all over the garage floor. Needless to say I was rather pissed and said screw it for the time being. ;) Ok, I'm spoiled and it was lunch time. I figured I better go inside and check out the Assembly Manual so I know what comes off next since there is so much sheet metal up front and I want to make sure I take the right stuff at the right time.

I'm really starting to dig that sea foam green color that is on the firewall.

How do you insert the pictures into your post??  I wanted to post pix of my project.  The truck looks neat...

Welp a little off topic, but non the less I'll bite because I love this stuff. ;)

First you find a host of course and I just happen to use photobucket. Upload your photos to them or whomever you choose.

Doing it with code.
You could use

Use Freeboxes buttons. You would use this button when you post a post, which automatically throws in the same code as I hand typed up above.  (http://www.freeboxjukebox.com/Forum/Themes/Musiconica/images/bbc/img.gif)

Yeah my truck project has nothing to do with the site, but I figured we all have hobbies outside of our Jukeboxes adn figured why not share and maybe others would as well. ;)

Dude that green is really nice looking. You going to go for a full re-spray? Still i maintain mat black with red rims is the future... LOL

Haha, I'm not sure. I thought a black body and red rims would look cool, but I'm not sure about spraying it flat green with red rims. Might look like a tube of toothpaste going down the road. ;)

I thought about this style of wheel with just a little different hub cap. Of course I thought about painting the white to match the body.
http://www.who-sells-it.com/cy/wheel-vintiques-inc-2201/steel-wheels-11538/page-6.html

I'm still up in the air with everything. Since I haven't torn it all down to really see what needs to be cut out and what needs to be just bought and replaced. Either way its going to take forever at my pace. ;)

Welp the plan was simple. I was to go outside and take a few shots of how the wires ran around in the engine bay.

The wife said dinner would be ready in 1/2 an hour so I said so be it. 1/2 hour goes by and I decided to hook up my air compressor since she hasn't yelled for me yet, that I relocated in the garage earlier, but never had a chance to wire it up.

"Honey my sister is coming over and we need to run to the store and pickup some stuff. I'll take the boy so work on your truck some."

Air tools in hand and I sprayed all the bolts with PB blaster yesterday so I was hoping things would come apart easier. I got a little carried away. ;)

Good enough place if any to store things

Honestly I had no idea what my steering box really looked like.

I was so excited to find a little quarter sized hole in the radiator support. Well at least that's what I think its called. Hahahah

I just have to figure out what do do with all the parts in the bed when I pull the cab and the motor. I don't want the truck pulling a wheelie.

I met a new truck buddy with a 63 and he came over so we could well do some truck talking. We where out looking at his and then we came in to my garage and looked at mine. So we go back into my garage and we are standing around my motor just shooting the bull. Its a bit windy outside and all of the sudden there is a boom sound and what sounds like a Vacuum. I notice my small hand vacuum that I hang on the wall. We both look up and the general statement was what the heck is that.

We both thought did a tree just fall down? Yep

Nothing like snapping 3 joists that somehow I get to figure out how to fix later.

Luckily the tree fell at an angle and hit my garage opposed to straight across the driveway and taking out SlimPikins truck.

Oh yeah nice to meet you Slim. ;) hahah
