Post by: cadis12 on December 30, 2007, 04:31:38 AM
Here is my attempt at a Jukebox project.  It was contstructed out of a TV stand.  You can find more pictures of the construction process at http://www.adisweb.com/jukebox .  I am pretty happy with the ways things turned out.  Let me know if you have any quesions!  Thanks!

Very cool.  I think it turned out great!  Just as elegant looking as any other piece of furniture in the house.  Good job!

What you could do which I did, but I haven't taken any photos as of yet since my machine is well not done. Its a prototype machine/jukebox.
I cut a hole in the back of my cabinet and have the power supply blowing air out the back, which creates a vaccumm in the front pulling in colder air.

As well my amp is full size where your sub is I have my PC sitting on a shelf above like you do. I drilled holes in the shelf so hotter air could rise up and the power supply fan and another fan like it on the opposite side of the shelf would exhaust air out. So basically I have a fan on the left and ride side of the case pushing air out and pulling fresh air in.

I'm only running I'd guess 80mm fans, but when I do actually trash the particle board to either oak or birch I'm probably going to go with a pair of 120mm fans. Replacing the power supply with an equiped 120mm.

Just adding the rear openings and the fans made a HUGE difference in temp along with the air in front coming in.

Thanks for the ideas!  I plan to tackle this problem this weekend.  I'm going to try cutting a hole like you said.  I really don't know how much of a problem the heat will be but I would like to get it a little cooler in there.  Thanks again!

Is it hard to use with the monitor completely flat like that?

Looks nice.

It's actually not bad!  Now, when I was setting up the software and looking at the computer monitor for a long time my neck started to get sore looking down. Otherwise, for people to walk up, look down, select a few tunes and walk away its really not that bad.

hi cadis12 i noticed you were using a griffin powermate usb controller have you had any isssues with it? i have had one for a while now but i could never get it to control anything i.e volume. the best it does is scroll left and right across the screen when i twist it. i didn't get a cd driver with it when i bought it so installed the latest drivers from griffins website but still no joy after trawling through the internet for hours and hours on end i found no solution. what version of windows are you running it on? i'm using win xp sp2. iv.e also read that that there are issues with it not being recognized after a restart have you had any of these problems with yours?   cheers casper

I'm running XP SP2 with all the current updates.  I used the stock drivers that came on the included CD.  From there it places an icon in your tray that you can use to set up the powermate however you want it to function.  I have had no problems setting it up to control volume.  I also have it set so pressing down on the knob mutes the sound.  It's pretty slick.

I have the same problems with the restart issue.  Turn the computer off or restart and it does not recognize the Powermate.  It's a headache cause you have to unplug and plug it in to get it active.  Not a big deal for me since I leave this computer on 24/7 as it also acts as my FTP server.

Good luck with your driver issues!

Guys,

I just got one of these too to play with Freebox, for controlling the volume and paging through the albums. My Powermate came with a driver CD V1.5.3 and after install and config the Powermate gets recognized and works fine. I have powered down and then brought my PC back up and the Powermate gets recognized and works fine after reboot. For the "fun" of it I downloaded the latest driver V2.0.1 and installed it, it recognized the Powermate and worked fine. I powered my PC down and brought it back up and the Powermate no longer worked, so re-installed V1.5.3 and it works fine again even after reboot. Check what driver you are using and if it isn't V1.5.3 let me know and I'll send the driver software I have out to you and see if that fixes your problem. Thanks

BTW, I just set my Powermate up to page through the album covers, just set keymappings in the options screen for browse forward and back, and it works really smoothly going through the albums, a little easier than touching the screen everytime if also using a touchscreen. I use the click down left and right for the volume.

I have been away from the forums since I am currently focused on my retagging process  :tommy
I would like to get those old drivers from you!  That would solve a big headache!  THanks.

This as got to be the most infuriating piece of hardware i have bought. The only good thing i can say about it is that its well built because i have thrown it at every wall in my home and the bloody thing won't die. i have tried it on 3 different computers and it still won't do a simple thing like turn the volume up. Oh well something else to get shoved at the back of my computer draw..

I think i warned you about it on MSN, as i had heard of issues with it. Hopefully these other drivers will get it working for you.

I just emailed the driver to Casper and Barry, so if Barry can get it posted, hopefully it can help anyone else having issues with the Powermate. After it is working properly, it is a very nice addition to the jukebox, for moving through album pages and volume control. Let me know if it works for you.

Glad to hear that fixed it!!! To get paging to work, just setup a letter for forward and back, Barry fixed this so it would work. I think I used M and N (or K and L) for it to work in the key mapping portion on the Options screen of Freebox and in the Powermate Control Panel for the Computer Action choose Send Key then put in the letter to use. I also used the volume key mapping on that screen too. Give it a try, and if there are issues let Barry know, as the key mapping is not 100%.

Thanks for the info i have now set it up so volume works by push and rotate and just rotate changes album page. I have to agree that its much smoother than my touchscreen and i can make it fly through the album pages. I am seeing some bugs though on the select a tune page where play next play now and add to queue buttons appear over the album pic. the strange thing is that these buttons are from the default blue skin and i'm using the black and blue skin weird. do you get any bugs whilst using yours? I tried to post a pic but i get the message upload folder full. Once again thanks for all your help in setting this up.  Casper

I just tried to increase attachment space, so try and attach now. It is better if you can upload it somewhere else though like photobucket and just link to it with the image link. Saves our disc space and bandwidth.  ;)

Casper,

I've had this same issue in the past when installing a new version of Freebox over the top of an older version. What I did to get rid of it is to uninstall Freebox, then go back to the Program Files folder and delete the Freebox V4 folder, then install the new version of Freebox, that should fix the problem. Don't know what files are there to cause the issue.

tried a fresh install after deleting freebox c/ folder and all contents but still no joy getting the same bugs. if i check the disable keymapping this fixes the problem so its gotta be that thats causing the problem. i have tried removing all the other skins from the skins folder except the black & blue but that doesn't work either. one for barry i think.

Yep, I just verified the bug... If the Disable Keymappings is unchecked, the buttons show up on the screen, just as Casper's image shows. Good catch Casper....

Got to say i think this will be a nice add on to my jukebox i have just stripped the button down and resoldered the usb connection so it comes directly out of the bottom of the button. I then plan to mount the button vertically on the front of my juke then all it will need is a couple of countersunk self tappers through the clear base to fix and when its all put back together it should look nice and neat without anywires or the screws showing.

Sounds great, can you send some pics of how you got the clear bottom off to move the wires? I was thinking of doing something similar. And also of the jukebox with the knob on it....

The clear bottom is just lightly glue if you get a sharp knife thats enough to pry it apart. you'll then be left with the switch itself and the base metal and the bit where the switch screws to. This is also glued but a very tight fit so i manouvered the switch to one side and pushed apart from underneath. Its hard to explain without showing you so i'm going to take step by step pics tomorrow and post them on flickr. i'll put a link on here. hopefully i will also fit the knob to my juke tomorrow and i'll post a pic.

Here's a pic with the knob on the juke but i am undecided as to wether i like it in that position or not. and i think i will probably have to remove it has i am going to replace the 15" screen with a 19" one. the first time i installed the knob i swung the juke door up and managed to rip all the wires out of the back of the knob. and i must say the wires are murder to soilder being so small and close together but the overall appearence is much better than coming out of the side of the knob.http://www.flickr.com/photos/21275698@N04/?saved=1

Casper,

That looks really good... As for the position, that is exactly what I pictured it to look like on the jukebox, but if you are going to be upgrading to a 19" monitor, it will obviously need to be moved down some. How's the functionality? I imagine you can fly through pages now....
Title: Re: My Jukebox from a TV Stand Project

Thanks eist. functionality is brilliant with the drivers you sent. got it set to scroll through album pages which like you said it flys through. also got the long click set to mute short click to pause. push and rotate set for volume. also noticed that with these drivers the knob is found on reboot. i'm probably going to have to make a complete new front door for the juke when the 19" overlay arrives which is probably easier than trying to salvage the one already on. ah well something to do next weekend.
