Title: Hardware specs for jukebox?
Post by: damono on September 18, 2008, 02:55:44 PM
Hey guys,
I'm just wondering what people are running Freebox v4 on? Reason I ask is that I have some old bits around that want to use, but not sure if they're gunna cut the mustard. I have a Duron 1100 with 256mb SDRAM, want to put in 2 video cards  (AGP+PCI) to run a dual screen layout too. My idea is to actually stream video clips/MP3s off my network with a wireless 54G card also.

Worse comes worse, I can get hold of something a bit more grunty.

Cheers
Damo

The computer will run it but playing over wireless is awful. A few of us have tested this and it's not very quick at all. 100mb wired network is fine though.

Ah ok. Im upgrading my wireless gear to 802.11N soon, which does 300mbit, so that shouldnt be a problem :)
Whats the load times/caching of music and music like on something of a Duron 1100mhz type of vintage? I'll be having a library of about 150gb of music and 50gb of music videos id say. Is it worth upgrading the PC?

You will have to set it up and see what you think it runs like. I have it running ok on P3 700mhz and it is perfectly usable on that system.

Why use 2 video cards?  Just get one with dual outputs, which are most of them.

Dual output or 2 video cards will work. If you are using built in video then 2 video cards might be an easier option especially if it's a SFF machine and you can only add a PCI card. Either way you will get the same results.
