Hi all, just wondering if there is a market in jukebox's, what I mean is could one make several touch screen jukeboxes and sell them?
Also does anyone know of a company that wil send weekly updates to jukeboxes, like the jay box you seen in pubs nowa days! I know there will be a montly cost but that isn't an issue!
cheers all
Rob ;)
Depends on what country you are in!
In the U.S.A. you can have a jukebox in any establishment, but you have to pay SESAC, BMI & ASCAP royalties if you charge money to listen to songs. Then the songs have to be legal and verified where they were obtained. Each mp3 on each box will have to be paid for individually even though it is the same song. Most bars or bowling alleys dont want a visit from either of the three mentioned above reprsentatives so they dont get heavy fines and I'm sure they will point a finger your way also!
I'm not sure about other countries so others feel free to chime in!
Now if you just want to build and sell the jukebox, the author of the Jukebox programming, such as Barry, will want some cash for each box sold with their program on it. Barry charges $250 (US) for a commercial license and I'm sure he would want that for each box sold!
Also, if you sell the box, are you going to maintain it with up to date programming? Skins? Updating the music? Alot of leg work involved and to think about before you start selling them. Are you going to warranty the parts or programming? Give user support? Just refering the user to the forums here isnt very good support from you, the seller! What if the box crashes in the middle of a customers party, are you going to rush over a replacement so they can use while you figure out the buyers issues?
Building the jukebox and leaving the customer hanging isnt good for sales and word gets around quick about bad service and lack of customer support!
Hey, we've all thought about making a couple boxes up ourselves and selling them! Then reality sets in and we realize what kind of work it would take to build and maintain them!

Fordman
Fordman is very right on this matter im from australia and hold a fair majority of sales and hires in my area there are alot of licensing issues that go with this matter along with the updating and so on, if you are seriously thinking about this it can become alot of work i currently have 10 rental jukeboxs and 5 installed 3 of my rentals are TOuch Screen using e-touch which have been running for about 3 months now and even they are alot of work, re-calibrating the touch screens every week. Updating music fortnightly and so on. I have 5 Arcade jukeboxs installed but the software is very reliable and have been using it for 5 years without one problem now which means no software updates. Best way to do it is to wait until e-touch is running like clockwork and sell the units without music but a cd drive they can rip with and usb drive. Let them worry about licencing i am still running the first version i purchased of e-touch because i have tested it very thoroughly and alot of work for me to test every release of e-touch barry releases ???
Jay Box? I assume you are in the U.K. If so then the company you need to speak to is broadcom, they can supply monthly updates for £35 a month. However there will need to be a way for the jukebox to lock down if it doesn't recieve and update within a month, that is one of their requirements.
