Title: Bit of a techie one this...
Post by: Rob_Hendley on December 31, 2009, 07:33:51 PM
Good evening guys,

I am trying to get my mp3s upmixing to 5.1 on a Creative Labs Audigy Platinum EX.  To be honest, I don't think the soundcard really matters in this instance.

Anyhow, I understand E-touch uses WMP to play the mp3s - is this right or wrong?

I am using Creative Labs own upmixing engine called CMSS which is not upmixing to all the speakers, which I think is because I am using e-touch, rather than Creative's own media player.  Does anyone have any ideas?  Do I need a specific plugin for WMP to allow stereo to 5.1 upmixing.  Would it make a difference installing an up to date AC3 codec?

I have googled the problem, but can't really say that I have got anywhere.

For the record, I have tried all the obvious things - updating to newest audigy drivers, ensuring control panel sounds is set to 5.1 etc

Any suggestions would be much appreciated...

Regards
Rob

I have been lead to believe that the only way to have 5.1 sound was to have the music originally recorded that way or digitally remastered. Im not sure if that is what your doing, but tunes from the 50's - early 90's usually not recorded 5.1 as some arnt even 2.1. Some were lucky to be stereo as recordings were on tape rather than a digital file.

But I could be way off!

No my friend, you are quite right.  However, this is where the upmixing comes in - it plays the stereo sound through 5.1 channels.  I can't get my upmixing to work though!

So, does e-touch 5 use windows media player?  If so, should e-touch play music with whatever setting you specify within windows media player?  e.g if I had an upmixing plugin for WMP, and then close it, should e-touch use that plugin?

Further, is e-touch compatible with all versions of WMP?

Does e-touch merely use the WMP codecs and if so, would the sound be susceptible to any filters I have enabled for the WMP codec?

E-Touch uses WMP, it will work with WMP10 but really you need WMP11. I have not tested it with any other versions. It should use whatever settings you set in WMP as evidenced by the changing of the VIS in WMP or the installation of the cross render plugin.

Ah I dunno - this 5.1 is simply not working.  Creative Labs drivers are shite!

I reckon I'm gonna change the setup to a 2.1 and install a second screen or LED where the other three speakers were meant to be
