Title: Highest image quality on album view
Post by: James77 on August 09, 2011, 07:08:45 PM
Hi,
I am trying to resize my cover.jpg to coversmall.jpg to speed up the album browsing.  I am using the standard skin.  I resized the covers to 142x165.  This increased the speed of the program, but the covers did not look as good as before.   I deleted those, and tried 170x170.  This produced a better quality cover.
Why would that produce a better quality cover?  I checked with the skin tool, and I believe the covers are 142x165, so I figured that would produce the best quality and speed.
Any idea what I am doing wrong, and what the best size should be?  Also, why are the covers not square, wouldn't that produce the best quality when scaling for the skin?

Thanks

The program you use to do the resizing can have a lot to do with the image that is produced. Try a couple different programs and compare the results.  A few free ones are VuePrint, FastStone Photo Resizer, IfranView.

Anything over about 460x460 for cover.jpg (Track listing, Now Playing) and 165x165 for coversmall.jpg (this was for the standard 12 album cover art on Album Page for the default skin) is a waste because they will not show up any better on the jukebox because of the size of the image displayed.  That is why the recommended sizes originally were 500x500 and 170x170 respectively.  And now that the actual cover.jpg images have been reduced in latest skins so 500x500 is overkill but since those images are only being shown one per page the single larger image will not slow down E-touch and will give you a better chance of having quality cover art on most skins .  As for the coversmall.jpg those image sizes have remained the same size and 170x170 should page nicely without delay on most computers and this size is good for 12 or higher Album Cover on the Album Page.  If you use a 6 Album Cover the coversmall.jpg at 170x170 may appear grainy but that should be the only instance it does.  With a 6 Album Cover you could probably get away with using just the single cover.jpg for both or if you want the best paging performance on the Album Page with the 6 Album cover use 250x250 images (anything larger would be a waste).

Yes, the covers technically should all be square but that is up to the person who creates the skin.  Anything other than square will always result in some distortion, especially when resizing.

This is all based off 1024x768 screen setting.

Thanks, I will use 170x170 then.  I guess I must be viewing the cover size wrong in the skin tool ( standard 12 cover ).  The speed up is very noticeable when paging through.

I may leave my cover.jpg's alone ( I have some that are 1000x1000, etc..).  They only get displayed when clicking on the album, so that should not lead to a slowdown correct?

Thanks for your help  :beer
