Title: Draginits 1st jukebox project -complete-(re-designing)
Post by: draginit on June 14, 2007, 10:57:26 PM
ok, heres my jukebox that i started just when freebox was in its infant stages. ;D  been finished for some time now and just polishing up the loose ends...now that the 2nd monitor has been working perfectly for me, my future and last things left to do are  finish hooking up the original coin slot, mount ext. USB ports, i gotta go wireless!, the door only opens bout half way from a short IDE cable to the disk drive, so my keboard mouse are virtually inaccesible. i thought i could do everything on the touchscreen, whoops. thats about it,..i think... you can see the entire build beginning to end at http://www.myspace.com/twelveninedy  just go to pics and you cant miss it.(3rd album)
-if you want to see some karaoke action, check in the party pics!!! its just bout every weekend  for me!!!

welp, my touchscreen crapped out today (completely fried!) :'(  ( so ive decided this a good opportunity to do a little upgrading and stop messing around with a litlle 7" screen. i was thinking of getting one of the used 15" elo from ebay i saw in a thread over at byoac. but i thought i saw a thread somewhere for a 19" for bout 100$ more.
-i dont want to waste my efforts with the current box by starting a new project and thought i could make a wall unit or something for just the touchscreen monitor. and modify the current panel into something else.. i have to measure but i think i can just fit the led panel that netcat offers in there and also still use the 2nd monitor for what it was intended for.  anyone have any thoughts on this?  (im going to do a mockup in photoshop and get a better idea)
-im bummed now cuz i cant have the ease of my t/s and gonna setup a crt next to it in the mean time.
-oh yea, i may need a lot of help with this wall unit idea, as it might have to be wireless if possible.

----just finished photoshop---
-i measured the old faceplate area to be 17 3/4" long and almost 5" tall so im guessing it will be an almost exact fit.

This as got to be one of my favourate jukeboxes i'm limeted for space would love a juke this size. Anyway back to the point the sign mesures 17" / 4" but you have got to consider the power jack also plugs into the side. I think you would be better off removing the frame altogether from the sign and making your own so it sits nice and flush instead of the rounded edges. I put one of these in one of my jukes and ended up taking the frame off i also had to re-soilder the power supply so it went behind the led board and moved and soidered the infrared remote pickup (2 min job) I then routered my wood so the sign sat flush then i put a my own frame round it and it looked part of my cabinet instead of sticking out like a sore thumb as it did in the frame. I can't remember the exact measurements out of the frame but you'll have loads of room. just something for you to consider. you saw the 19" touchscreen offer in the general discussion area. touchscreen by just_buck. good luck with the cabinet i'd like to see some more pics when you install the sign.

If you are going to go wireless for the video you just need to hook up a video sender to the TV out of the graphics card and you will be good to go. However it will mean you have to move the PC etc into the wall mounted cab so you are in effect building a new juke. The LED sign would look good there in your cab.

Quotethe sign mesures 17" / 4" but you have got to consider the power jack also plugs into the side.
cool, with those measurments then its definitly do-able. decasing is probably the way to go, i agree that i could probably produce a cleaner look for the faceplate, but looking under ther i found that even with the powerjack running out the side i will have plenty of room as there is nothing back there. only thing tho is i will have to remove the entire coin mech assemby, but im ok with that as i never hooked it up or planned on putting for public use anyway. (plus it rattled with the bass up and made just enough noise to notice sometimes)

QuoteIf you are going to go wireless for the video you just need to hook up a video sender to the TV out of the graphics card and you will be good to go. However it will mean you have to move the PC etc into the wall mounted cab so you are in effect building a new juke.
-yea, i kinda thought about putting the PC in there anyways, it is a pain to do anything underneath that door and now i can put in a keyboard tray too and maybe an acces door to the pc n such. and im due for a new project for myself. so brings my next question.
does anyone think 19" would be a bit excessive for something like this? haha thats a lot of screen! i would have to palm it to select an album! haha. Im not too concerned about price of either one but just wanted opinions on if i should use 15" or 19" t/s monitor.
-wireless,..video senders? I like! i'll have to look into that when i get a chance.  but now the led couldnt go wireless huh? i would probably stilll be needing to mount the new unit pretty close for the cable to reach the pc. i may have to build just an attachement to the existing cab, then i could just keep the tv wired too.  im going to start drawing up some designs here at work today.
-well, i guess i'll start by ordering the led sign...

i need a little help....
ok, ive ordered the 19" t/s monitor and led so hopefully those are on there way soon.
-ive been looking on the net for senders and can find numerous types of video senders but when looking for audio...sheesh.   i was using optical out from my sound card on the original setup and trying to find a sender to use the same or combo video/audio optical sender.. anyone seen one of these or can point me in the right direction to start shopping?  or whats another audio option? im hoping by sending the audio signal wireless it doesnt lose the quality of sound.

Title: Re: Draginits 1st jukebox project -complete-

All the video senders i have seen will also send audio but as tot he quality i am not 100% sure. If you want to send the LED stuff wirless then i think you will have to do it using an IR Comport adapter. However that will need to be line of site with the reciever. I don't know of any wireless comport adapters that use radio but i have not looked to be honest.

welp, i guess i'll post my progress since this be the place to do it. ::)

anyways, wont get my 19" for awhile, i emailed pacificgeek and wont even get my tracking # til friday. (now thats slow) bummer.  waiting on word from netcat still,...and still researching wireless, which im starting to understand better now and it looks like i'll be going back to digital audio instead of optical in order for it to work.  but i did manage to finish a new face plate for the front and soon as i get exact measurements for the sign(posibly decased if it will look better)i can start making my cuts. heres a pic, with no parts arriving for awhile tho i probly wont post an update for awhile..(sucks, cuz that means i dont have my own juke to play with either)

i was able to reserve some machine time today and finished milling out the face plate. i am glad now i have decased it as i was able to flush mount the lens with the plate. it will appear as if it was meant to be there by design IMO.  here are some pics. still gotta make the brackets to actually hold the led sign to the back of it but atleast the tedious part is over. i'll be using the brackets to have two purposes. one to hold it of course and two will create enough pressure from the back of the led against the lens to hold it in place. but as a precaution i'll be tacking a little hot glue in the corners too.

its hard to see from the pic but i swear its completly flush when you run your hand over it!

the plate will be riveted on as well as the brackets and next stop. paint shop! hopefully i can match this paint again. it was awhile back and i didnt bother to write down my mix.

i made some serious progress today  ;D  after looking around the house desperatly for a wall adequete enough for hanging some wieght without modifying or damaging, i had no choice but to build a podium style cab for my touchscreen. i wouldve just built the screen straight into the wall but i rent and must live in temporary conditions for now. its still going to be wireless tho!!! hehee
ok,...pics.  -forgot to mention, aside from the monitor and accesories, the key to this project is i am only using spare parts and leftover wood from other projects. total cost so far for cab only.... 0$

i was able to get the monitor nice and flush for a secure fit too.

slotted for t-molding and purposly sqaured off within the rounded edges for a different look.

cut out an access panel and gonna use a cam lock to secure it...why not    .oh and found some midway handles layin around so i can carry it around easily.

HUGE monitor!!

im gonna wrap the lower front panel with this rubber matting(which i found extra from one of my toolboxes) for added protection like a kick panel. the whole bottom is made from a 2 x 4 and shaped to flow with the overall look. should look sweet once its wrapped.

and here it is at it stands the end of my day..

i still have to add an extension on top for a marquee. but maybe tomorrow.

Wow man. That curved looking creature has given me another idea for my Jukebox. I've been thinking entirely on encaseing everything in my Jukebox. Nothing says I couldn't have some crazy looking stand like that with my speakers and PC in something next to it.

Of course now I need a stand alone case/box for the PC and the speakers.

Anywho back on subject. Thats pretty cool looking man.

Well that has also given me an idea.....

The complete opposite....Putting everything in a stand like that...

Bit fatter of course.....Maybe a drop down lid to cover the screen and maybe a couple of doors on the front to open up and reveal the speakers.....Maybe flat panel speakers in the doors....

All done in real wood and stained and polished.....

Hmmmmm...

Ideas...ideas.....

Oh and can you tell It has to be GF friendly.....Piece of furniture like....  :'(

As well can I con you into some measurements? Im doing the cad thing at work, but would love to take some of your measurements and lay it out on the screen and tweak with them. Maybe even print a few things out so I can cut. I have no intentions of stealing your idea, but your design has my wheels really spinning.

Im planning on building a MAME machine some day in the future as well, but I'd really like the two to more or less complement each other. I just have to find a happy medium where they look the same, but not exactly the same because it would be more or less tacky and have that copied look.

Is the lower section with the black on it for their feet? Meaning for people to stand on while they select tunes?

already made! remember im modifying for blowing up my 7" screen ;D im sending the video to the screen wirelessly so i can set this up on the other side of the room and not have the speakers blasting in your ear whilst choosing music.

not exactly, its edge matches the depth of the front of the screen, i know when im leaning over a juke or phone or whatever, i tend to kick whatevers in front of me without noticing. this will save me from getting any damage to the paint. im planning on a bunch of drunk people including myself have wandering feet while choosing their music. make sense?

measurements..sure, i dont mind sharing. CAD must be nice tho, this is sorta build as i go out of whatever scraps i have laying around :D but its at the perfect hight IMO for the average person so not to break your back or krink your neck to see the screen.im at work for the evening, but sometime tomorow i'll try to throw out some measurments. any in paticular?

Dude, what is the top hinged part for? I thought the podium with the screen in it was all that it was going to be. I'm not sure what you are planning on putting in that top hinged section and i would like to know. Anyway it's all looking like your making progress so hopefully you'll be up and running real soon.

well not too much progress lately, but i did measure it up. these measurements are true and not rounded up. heres a pic:

right, so the monitor at a 30 degree angle is still very viewable from a distance, but the focus with this is for the current user selecting their music to be comfortable. i never did like vertically mounted screens, they make me feel rushed....but maybe thats the idea in public places??

-crazyorange said to me today why dont i put another monitor in the top half and have videos n such coming from both halves of the juke. there is room for a small one but i thought that is just going too much at this point. i have something else in mind along with probably putting ambient lighting between the two halves to create a green glow above the face of the touchscreen. (hence the small bow in the front top for a group of led's or a smal light fixture if need be. other than that im out of ideas to make this thing look "extremely custom" like mccoys! damn!! but my electrical skills are minimal. i'll stick to woods, fabrics, and metals and just keep on getting by in the electrical world. :P

Wow!

Last time I looked in here, it was still just pics of the green juke.  I'm really liking the new box- that's gonna be sharp, man.

I've been waffling about what shape I want to do mine in:  Wallmount, Traditional, Bartop, or Podium.  I was leaning towards a podium, as it'll fit in my available space better than any other option- but I'd never seen a podium design that I really liked the look of before.  Now I know it can be done.

thanks! glad i could inspire.   ;D

here are some quick updates. i finally got a chance to paint the podium and led sign over the weekend. now im just a few days away from hooking it all up.  i'll start with a quick video of the working led installed in the green juke!! (its thru myspace, so i guess there will be limited viewing  :()

http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=21987835

ok, pics for those who dont myspace...

It will be nice to finally clean up all the wires and close this thing up! and of course what your looking at is the sign with power but i havnt even turned the CPU on yet. gotta setup the podium first.

heres a quick teaser of the podium, (picture it with yellow t-molding..thats what i ordered)  I'M getting excited cuz im just a few days away from having my jukebox back!!  i have a few more details i need to do to it and secure the monitor in,...and decide if im going wireless or umbilical still, but i'll figure it out soon enough.

uuugghggh!!!! why cant i just ever be satisfied with a working system....no i gotta tweak my windows and think i can hack n get fancy logons and bootskins n such. well i toasted it... so im going to be fresh installing AGAIN. this sucks. im just venting here and i must resist going further than my knowledge allows...   hey i got some pics just before i crashed it tho. i'll post'em if anyones interested.

-can somone tell me maybe? what happens to the original administrator account on winXP win you create another account as administrator. it just dissappeared and reset all my settings. i know it exists somewhere cuz if i try to name an account administrator it says it already exists......but where?? anyways i know i should get on a pcgeek forum or something, im just venting.

1st pic, got the t-molding and its lookin pretty. i'll be taking video later.

2nd pic,  i cleaned up windows real nice, no labels, got rid of the stupid shortcut arrow, custom start bar, and even changed the default freebox icons :D.  only to crash it by accidently adding another user account with admin capabilities.  damn!!!!!!!!  :'(  ok im better now  ;D

-edit-(the next day)  AHHHH. it took a few hours but ive got a fresh install of windows now and everything else.

you can just see the juke in the distance there, i pulled the podium out a little to get them both in the photo

the flash brought out the speakers! whoa, you cant normally see thru the speaker grills.....i have been thinking of putting leds or lights to flicker to the beat in there.

So the podium is for selecting songs and the other part shows the videos etc? Looks great dude but is that the photo or has the paint com of on the front of your podium?

nice singing barry lol.  its amazing what the flash of a camera will bring out!. i never even noticed that before you pointed it out. i took a closer look, its the edge of the MDF board had soaked in a little of the paint. its really unnoticable in person and the bezel overhangs the edge a bit which hides it from the top angle.   ...beeeesides anyone here is too focused on the screen or dUrUNK to notice any imperfections too  ;D

hey eist, dont hurt yourself on my acord, ive waited this long, extra time wont kill me.. but i do appreciate the what you and squirell are doing!!!!
