Title: Online Manual
Post by: kizer on February 20, 2007, 06:07:12 PM
I've begun to tinker with the Manual and placed it online. Its a work in a progress and any screen shots or input is always welcome. I'd like to add any questions with answers to it as we grow so others can learn from what others ask.

The URL is in my signature for now and my plan is to make changes with review from Barcrest.

Personally i think you should use frames with the contents down the left hand side. So people can click the contents to jump to what they are looking for but so far so good dude.

Barcrest. Keep in mind Im using exactly what you've done so far. ;)

I was thinking frames would be the way to do it as well. I'd like to make new Screen shots that are a little bigger and easier to see and lay out the text with the pictures a little differently.

Seperate each section so its not one large run down the page of text and images. Its a work in progress so its going to be a long process. Well hopefully not to long, but anywho.

Welp tinkered some tonight.

I know each page has its own issues like the titles are different sizes and fonts. I just realized it after I uploaded it. hahaha. I'll get it all fixed up real soon.

Made some new screen shots.
Made the manual frame like.
Changed the layout just a little, but not really happy with it as of yet.
Screen shots are just a little bigger than the original, but are clickable for a larger image.

Its still in progress. ;)

Looking very nice dude. The quick start is spot on... I see what you are saying about the fonts, but it's really looking good dude.

Thanks.
I'm like you Barcrest. Once I start a project I can't leave it alone. Always tinkering. I've always released rough drafts to get the point out and tinker, tinker, tinker. ;)

I hope you don't mind, but later I might end up flooding the board asking tons of questions. Most of them for clarification on things and simply becasue I don't understand which will benifit the board and the Manual. I'm sure some might be obvious and well some maybe not.

I Just noticed the screenshots of the config are the old one without the import tools... You might want to update thoose. It's all coming together any questions just ask away. I am hoping to get a fair bit of coding done tonight, that's the beauty of not having the money to go to the pub, more time spent on freebox.

Hmmm, I'll have to look at that. I'm running 2.1.15 on that machine I took the screens from. However anything is possible. ;)

I've been lacking on updates. I'll get with it soon.

Not yet. I was well for a better word slammed over the last few evenings. I'll get the new photos up and do some more tinkering this evening. Im pretty much unable to do anyting at work other than get on the forum now and then.

As for the import tool Ive well not had any luck. I posted that in the database update thread.

As for the updating frequency of the Online Manual it will be "often if not every night". Just lately its been a bit tough. I know cry you a river. ;)

Updated the Manual some

- New Screen shots
- Added the inport tool
- Added a little demo on the front page of the Jukebox in action

Looks like I have to do it all over again for some screens becasue 2.1.17 argggg. ;)

Barcrest should I make a note on the front page somewhere that the contents might vary between releases due to some being public and private releases? I would like your jargon on that one. ;)

Also I have issues throwing up the Skin Tool, but I have no clue how to use it. If somebody could give me some crude notes and some crude screen shots I can pretty them up with new screen shots and text.

If you can both host them.. i have uploaded them to kizers space i just need to add the links. If you can also host them so we have 2 mirrors it might help out... I'm not sure.

Yeah.

Currently I'm providing the Online Manual.
Mirror or whatever on the public release.
Mirror or whatever on the skins as well.

I'll do some screen shots for the skins for preview too.

Barcrest do what you need to do to advertise the skins when ever your up to it.

I did some more tinkering with the layout of the Manual using some style sheets. Nothing fancy just some tinkering.

I'd like to start working on the skins next. Maybe do up a separate section or keep it in the same area as the online manual.

Also I would like to start posting some screen shots of the skins coming soon.

Dude that looks the bomb now... I really like it. I will try and create a basic manual for the skintool and send it across to you so you can get something up. I will also fix all the skins up tonight and upload them to your site again, they will all be compatible with 2.1.18 which i am also hoping to release tonight although last nights test of the speed up of the code has thrown up the old error where it hangs (Doesn't switch to next song) intermitently so i need to fix that before making a release or revert back to the old method and keep working on it for 2.1.19

Either way 2.1.18 will be out tonight with some newer stuff in and some bug fixes.

Thanks.

Does anybody have any requests or wishes for the Manual?

Todo list:
- I still would like to get into more detail with each section explaining what each check box does.
- Skin screen shots
- Often asked questions
- System requirements. OS requirements basically.
- Make the manual downloadable unless of course Barcrest doesn't want it.
- Add jump links so any user on the forum can point to any section of the manual to aid others.

hows this going? any future updates we can expect?   it would be cool to see a walkthru/write-up on some of the new features..  especially the new web stuff(how to set it up,etc).. i would like change my sig and be cool too ;) , with the ease of a manual...

-btw, i think whats already available is excellent!

Dragnit,

Yes I agree. I was just talking with Barcrest a few days ago about it. He expressed his concern and said he knows that hes made some changes that will require tons of new screen shots and cut me some slack, but asked that I give it a go.

I promised him I would start working on it again and would do my best to address every checkbox and blank on the screen. I think it would be a good idea as well so new people to the app could figure out whats going on. ;)

Long story short I planned on at least getting the newest version up and Im guessing the only way to do it would be to showcase the Private Release since honestly all the "Bells and Whistles" are in the private releases opposed to the last public release. Of course you have to be a donating member to really get the benifit.

Ok, for adding your last tune in your Signature I'll make sure I put something together. Since its been requested.

Dragnit,

Sorry I've been slammed. However last night I was actually tinkering with the Config stuff last night. I know you want the webstuff working. So let me give it a crack tonight I'll get something up for you. I had this grand idea of doing a bunch of work and releaseing it all at once, but when I look at it its well not going to happen. So I'll tackle the web stuff for you first and move on from there.

just a quick note: when I visit the online manual, my AVG scanner picks up a threat.

"freeboxjukebox.htm"

Virus Identified HTML / Framer.Z

not sure if you're aware of it??

Hmm, I Just tried every URL in the manual and the only thing I found wrong was the Download URL. I couldn't even find a URL you posted up above. Can you PM me the entire URL so I can check it?

Ok, for you tech guys. Heres what I found on this thing.
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r20256422-Question-about-HTMLFramerZ

Appearently it only can affect IE browsers and since I use FireFox my antivirus never triggered it my Anti-Virus could never see it.

As well from what I can see around there are a lot of 404 errors on this so does it really install? Anyways I didn't want to leave you guys wondering and I'll continue to look for info just incase.

Yea, its gone now. Never did any harm to my system, as I just let the AntiVirus heal it when ever I hit this page.
