Title: Bartop Jukebox Project
Post by: eist1 on July 22, 2008, 04:04:02 AM
Well here's a picture of the bartop touchscreen game/jukebox I just finished. I used a kit for the case, and have a 200 Watt car amp inside (powered by a 600 watt PC power supply), and using 6" Kicker 65 Watt RMS speakers that put out very nice bass for a 6" speaker. I also used some of the things I had laying around like the LCD Display and the Powermate spinner, which I have configured to use to page through the album pages, volume, and also configured it for a click to use the esc key to get out of any Mame touchscreen games. Just getting everything loaded on it (Music, Videos and Karaoke), but it is working very nicely, I am almost considering making it a bartop arcade box too, by adding a joystick and some buttons to get full use out of it. But I can wait on that for now.

Looks nice dude, i don't think i would add a joy stick personally but that's just me. Loooks pretty slick i like the way you used the LED like a marquee.

I only have a 15" and it works fine with the games.

The 15" works fine, haven't hade a chance to play much yet, but in testing it looks like it will work well.

Thanks guys, I'm running it at 1024x768, the only thing that is a little hard to hit is the start button in the bottom left corner, but other than that evetything is great.

Does the 600w power supply both the PC and the car amp, or do you have two power supplies in there?

Awesome work dude!!

I have the 600 Watt Power Supply powering everything (other than the monitor) so the PC, amp and LCD display. Powers it up without any issues.

Yes, it powers everything other than the monitor. I think you mentioned you were doing the same thing aren't you?

If you require a Joystick and buttons I'd make a seperate mini box I guess with a USB plug so you can connect it and unconnect it when not used.

I guess we'd call it a detachable unit. Hahaha... I've seen a few mini's like that that more or less ruined the look adding additional buttons and a joystick when they could of just added a plugin on the side and a custom built control box.

With my Jukebox, which looks like crap someday I'll add other features or I'll just build a second one with a removeable control panel. Man wood and PCs are easy to find/salvage, but those touch screen Monitors are a biatch to find reasonable.

Yes indeed.

as shown here (http://www.780tech.com/encoder.jpg)

Forgive the sarcasm.... I do tend to be a bit of an ass hole (as my wife constantly remonds me)

I am also powering, Touchscreen circuit, LED Screen, Car amplifier, Wireless Mics and anything else that will work with +5V DC or +12V DC without interferring with the sound quality.

in conversations with other people it would appear I was not the "inovator" of this concept as I originally thought.

The real of this concept is that when the ATX motherboard sends the "shutdown" siognal to the power supply EVERYTHING shuts down simultaneously. (Except my monitor which goes into "power Saving" mode)

Well I went ahead and updated the bartop with arcade controls (Trackball (Blue Glowing), spinner, joystick and buttons, and a control panel overlay). It now allows me to get much more use out of it. Touchscreen jukebox, MAME and Pinball, plus I just installed Hyper Bowling http://www.ecievents.net/Inter&inf/Hyperbowling_VR.htm (http://www.ecievents.net/Inter&inf/Hyperbowling_VR.htm) which is really cool with the trackball. Let me know what you think

Is the LED screen behind some kind of tinted glass or plastic?

From the pics, you really cant tell, but I dont think you would need it to be behind glass or anything. My betabrite seems to have a pretty rigid screen that would probably take a small knock or two.

I'm in the process of building another juke with a betabrite embedded into the 'box itself and I wasnt planning on putting any kind of covering over the betabrite.

Oh, so the betabrite spans the whole box?  Essentially the width of the betabrite has dictated the width of the whole constructions?

It looked to me like the betabrite was just the central LED section.  I didn't know they were that wide.

The Betabrite is almost the whole width there is about 1" on both sides. I ordered this kit from Mameroom Designs http://www.mameroom.com/ProductDetail.asp?ID=UAIIBARTOP (http://www.mameroom.com/ProductDetail.asp?ID=UAIIBARTOP) but I had them customize it so it didn't have all of the arcade holes drilled (I did that myself) and I also had them customize the monitor area, as I used a 15" ELO touchscreen, which fit into the countersunk section just perfectly. There is clear plastic in front of the LED screen, as the kit comes with a clear piece to use over the top of a Marquee, but instead of putting a Marquee graphic in I put the LED in place of it, I also used some black construction paper over the top of it to cover up the edges and the 1" area on the sides, then put the clear plastic over it. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Right I get it - thanks.

This is my build a week or so ago (i have now added angled, polished aluminium round the edges and a touch screen)

You see my predicament is that the top part above the screen (with the three holes in) were going to be the front left, right and centre speakers of a 5.1 setup.  However, it now transpires that I will be unable to upmix the mp3 stereo sound to 5.1, so I will put the left and right speakers at the bottom behind the silver cloth and revamp the top bit.

Option 1: Have some kind of chrome and marble decoration with the jukebox name

Option 2: Have an LED screen inset with a black surround and clear perspex bending around the sides and across the front (similar to yours, but curved at the edges)

Option 3: Perspex over black as per option 2, but instead have a small (6 or 7 inch) screen in the centre for visualisations or videos and one of those round neon static things either side.

Any ideas would be very much welcome

Cheers
Rob

I think an LED screen would look really good on top (would look like a marquee) It might be better to move the speakers down to the bottom anyway, as having the speakers that close for 5.1 left, right and center probably wouldn't have given you the 5.1 sound, as it would always sound like it was coming from the center. Nice job on the cabinet, I would imagine you also have a sub woofer in the bottom too. I am using a 300 Watt Car Amplifier powered by my PC power supply and 2 Kicker Speakers installed on the sides, and it really gets loud... Let me know if you have any other questions.
