Just Interested in what people are using, it will help to understand what resolutions people should develop their skins for.  If you are using an other size then please reply to this topic with the resolution.

thanks

this was done before and most people voted for 1024x768 I believe.  However the skin authors including myself usually make it for what we use.  I use 1024x768 on my system so when I make a skin that is the size I make it for.

1024 is the best resoltion as most can use that. 1280 really limits the amount of people that can use it as most use 15" touchscreens. I am looking at upgrading to a 17" at some point but even then i could use a 1024 skin without problems... 1024 will be the main resolution for a while i think until the larger touchscreens come down in price.

I would personally say go for 800x600 for the guys that can only run that, but maximum at 1024x768 for those of us that can run it. However going beyond the 1024x768 is only going to allow for a select few.

I'd love to have that HP PC to run freebox, but in my case its not going to happen due to funds.

the reason for asking is that it is a whole lot easier downscaling graphics to lower resolutions than upscaling, that said Barry is right that a 1024x768 will run and look not to bad on the 1280x1074 however why not get the benefit of the screen size if you do have a larger one.

Also having to skin for the different resolutions is probably putting people off doing the skinning in the first place.  I have spend literally hours on my latest incarnation and am dreading the thought of doing a lower res one to share.

Well take the Christmas Skin. It was done in 1280x1024. The author himself said he was not going to down scale it so the majority of us could use it. Luckly we had a member or two that was willing to give it a try and did a pretty good job at it too.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying "Do not build it to a higher resolution" its just tough for a lot of people that get really excited to see a skin soon to be released and find out that they can't use it because its to big for their monitor.

I'd say if you or anybody else is building a skin to share they should from the start say they are building it for Resolution X and plan to allow others to down scale. Just for one keeps people from getting their hopes up and hopefully somebody who is checking it out volunteers to downscale it. At the sametime of course showing off your skin will intice others to do the samething. Thats what its all about right. Wink

Thats a fair point and I agree with you, so in that case it is better to build bigger, if you have bigger that is, and let folks downsize if they wish, because sampling up incurs quite a penalty in graphic quality once the image has been flattened.

*Bump*
This is what I use to determin what sizes are used. If you are using a diffirent size than 1024x768 or 800x600 you need to vote for your size here.
Widescreen skins only got 2 votes so far, so if you want me to do them you need to vote so that I can get an idea of how many widescreen users we have on the forum.
Building a skin for one or two users is just not worth the effort.

I wanted to do a widescreen version skin earlier but seeing here that there where only 2 votes I didn't go ahead with them.

Barry, can you please edit the poll to include more widescreen sizes?

None of those are widescreen sizes are they? Added an option for widescreen and reset the poll counts.

Like fat-johnny I am using 1680x1050 on a 22" widescreen.. or I would be if there was a skin for that res. I am actually using the 1366x768 skin in 1400x1050.

I'm wondering how this software would look on a lower-res screen?  While I'll probably track down a touchscreen LCD, I already own a 13" touchscreen arcade monitor that is CGA.  Here are the stats for this monitor:

HORIZONTAL                              VERTICAL
Scan Frequency: 15.72 KHz          Scan Frequency: 60.0 Hz
Scan Period: 63.6 µSec                Scan Period: 16.7 mSec
Active Video: 46.9 µSec               Active Video: 15.3 mSec
Video Delay: 11.9 µSec                Video Delay:  1.2 mSec
Sync Pulse:  4.7 µSec                 Sync Pulse:  0.2 mSec
Scan Line: 456 Pixels                  Screen: 262 Lines
Resolution: 336 Pixels                  Resolution: 240 Lines
Clock Freq: 7.16 MHz
