BMP files give good results because they have no artifacts. The colours are solid and the remove colour seems to work well with them.

Yes, but your skin size may be very big at the end because BMP is much bigger files. BMP files are normally about 3 times bigger than GIF files.
I have explored this in the past and found that it will take up to much disk space.

Well, I figured it out.  The images weren't the same size as I had them in the skin.  For example, some of the images were 90x60 pixels, but in the skin they were sized to 75x50 pixels.

Once I sized the images the same so they weren't being scaled, the pink edges went away.
